Mayor Of Clare Title Row A ‘Storm In A Teacup’ – Ryan

The ongoing row surrounding the title of ‘Mayor of Clare’ is being described as a ‘storm in a teacup’ by its future incumbent.

The issue, following concerns expressed about the legality of the title by Councillors Paul Murphy, Ann Norton and Mark Nestor, led to robust exchanges at this week’s monthly Council meeting.

In a statement to Clare FM, current Cathaoirleach, Councillor Mary Howard has expressed her disappointment on the matter, labeling the motion put forward at the meeting as a ‘non-story’ and a ‘distraction’.

Sixmilebridge-based representative PJ Ryan, who is due to assume the title in June, believes the term ‘Mayor’ is important in the context of international travel.

Clare County Council has told Clare FM that there is no ‘overwhelming desire’ to change the current practice, meaning the title of Mayor of Clare will continue to be used by the Council going forward.
