Man Hospitalised Following North Clare Climbing Accident

A man has been airlifted to hospital after falling almost five metres while rock climbing in North Clare.

The accident happened at Ailladee on the Lisdoonvarna to Ballyvaughan road yesterday.

The alarm was raised at around 3.30 yesterday afternoon when a man, believed to be in his 30’s and from Italy, was reported to have fallen about 5 metres (15 feet) while climbing a rock face.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard quickly located the casualty and administered emergency first aid until ambulance paramedics arrived. Gardaí also attended the incident.

The man was then taken on board Rescue 115 and flown to University Hospital Limerick for further care.

The man is understood to have suffered multiple fractures but his injuries are not life threatening.

The area is a well known climbing area where emergency service have responded to several similar incidents in recent years.
