In opening the case, the Prosecuting barrister said Robbie Walsh went out socialising with two of his cousins in Kilkee on the Saturday of the August Bank Holiday Weekend in 2017.

At around 1 in the morning the three cousins went down to Marian Estate where the deceased man Karl Haugh lived.

It will be alleged an altercation broke out between the three Walsh cousins and Karl Haugh and some of his friends.

The jury was told it will also be alleged the accused Robbie Walsh stabbed Karl Haugh in the back with a knife causing a single penetrating wound.

The 25 year old was brought to University Hospital Limerick but was pronounced dead at 5.20.

The accused Robbie Walsh had been arrested for a minor public order offence the jury was told and released.

He was later arrested again that morning for assault and the Prosecuting barrister said it would be alleged he freely admitted to stabbing the deceased and expressed remorse.

The trial will hear from its first witnesses this afternoon.
