Man Arrested In Connection With Alleged Rape Of 75-Year-Old Woman In Ennis

A man has been arrested in connection with the alleged day-time rape of a 75-year-old woman in Ennis.

The incident is alleged to have occurred in a car park near Ennis Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre, after the woman was lured into a car under false pretences outside of the town’s public library.

The shocking incident began at around 11:30 last Thursday morning, when a man is understood to have lured a woman into his car outside Ennis public library.

The man had stopped his car at Ennis General Hospital and St Joseph’s Hospital before bringing the woman to a car-park located behind Ennis Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre.

It was here where the alleged rape took place.

The alarm was later raised by the woman, and Gardaí used CCTV evidence to identify the car.

A 49 year old man from Co. Mayo has now been arrested, and he was questioned at a Garda Station in Mayo under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

He was released without charge on Saturday lunchtime and a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
