A Garda investigation was launched in January of 2012 after the arrival of the severed pig’s head to the home of a Clare Garda.

47 year-old Brendan Mahoney of 74 Cabra Park, Dublin 7 was first charged in relation to the alleged offence at Kilrush District Court in July 2012, while the following year a bench warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to return to Ireland from a sun-holiday in Spain.

The previous month, Mr Mahoney’s bail conditions had been varied and his passport was returned to allow him go on holiday, and at that point there had been no objection from the state.

Now, Ennis Circuit Court has heard that Gardaí are escorting him back to Ireland from Spain after a European arrest warrant was executed.

He's due to land in Dublin this lunchtime, and Assistant State Solicitor Aisling Casey said that the law requires that he appear before in court later today.

It's expected that he will stand trial later this year, accused of posting a packet on January 26th 2012 that contained the animal's head.
