Five Elected As Local Election Counting Enters Day Two.

Counting has resumed in Clare following Friday’s local and European elections.

Already five of the 28 seats for the next incarnation of Clare County Council have been filled.

Fine Gael’s Joe Cooney topped the poll in Killaloe and was followed by Fianna Fáil’s Pat Hayes.

While in Ennistymon, Fianna Fáil’s Shane Talty was the first Clare local councillor elected and has been joined since by Fine Fáil’s Joe Killeen and Green Party’s Roisin Garvey.

The biggest suprise was the elimination of Fine Gael’s Bill Slattery in the Ennistymon area.

Ennis returned a first count with Fine Gael’s Mary Howard topping the poll but nobody has reached the quota yet.

And the votes for the Shannon and Kilrush Municipal districts will begin today.

Clare voters gave their support to the Divorce referendum with 39447 saying yes as opposed to the No total of 8551. Nationally the referendum passed with 82.1% in favour.
