SF Leader Claims Health Minister Should Be Held To Account Over Delay In UHL Modular Unit

The Sinn Féin leader insists that the Health Minister must to be held to account for the delay in the provision of the much-needed modular unit at University Hospital Limerick.

Minister Simon Harris has reassured in recent weeks that he’s committed to the 60-bed unit, and that funding will be contained in the Government’s yet to be announced revised capital plan.

But following the controversial overspend on the National Children’s Hospital, the 19.5 million euro facility at Dooradoyle, which was expected to be open this year, now won’t open until mid-2020.

Meanwhile, there’s been a significant drop in the level of overcrowding at the region’s main hospital today.

But University Hospital Limerick remains the busiest in the country, with 48 patients waiting for beds there this morning, according to the latest figures from the INMO.

25 of those were waiting on trolleys in the emergency department, with the remainder being accomodated in overflow areas of wards.

High volumes of patients have been attending there this week, with 70 waiting to be admitted on one day this week.
