Speculation is rife that the country could be in for a change of leadership after Enda Kenny meets with his party colleagues later.

The Taoiseach has been under increasing pressure to step aside in recent months but a leadership battle can’t officially begin until he makes an announcement to this effect.

Housing Minister Simon Coveney and Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar are widely regarded as the favourites but other names have been thrown into the hat too.

Independent Minister Katherine Zappone is supporting Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald.

The Taoiseach has told his party colleagues that he will be very clear about his intentions in this evening’s meeting.
