While the Council’s told Clare FM that its wardens issued two fines for dog fouling last year, just one fine of the maximum amount, €150, was paid.

The other notice was cancelled on appeal.

The low level of fines issued is a continuation of the recent trend, even though concerns regarding dog fouling have been acute in many areas in recent times.

There were also just two fines in 2017, while there were no fines issued altogether in 2016.

Under Section 22 of the Litter Pollution Acts, it is an offence not to clean up after your dog has fouled.

This can result in an on-the-spot fine of €150 or up to €4,000 if convicted before the District Court.
