Jump In Number Of Teenage Mothers In Clare

There’s been a jump in the number of babies born to teenage mothers in Clare.

Latest figures show that from July to September of last year, six women under the age of 20 welcomed a newborn – up from just one the previous quarter.

Figures released by the CSO show that between July and September of last year, 366 babies were born around the Banner county – up from the 347 born the previous quarter.

Of this, 167 were boys, 199 were girls and 241 of the newborns were welcomed by married parents.

The data also shows that 85 of the new mothers who gave birth in Quarter Three last year were still living with their own parents.

The 30 to 34 age bracket is the most likely time for women in Clare to give birth, with that group making up the majority of births, while 24 babies were born to mothers aged 40 and over.

It was the number of teenage mothers that saw the biggest rise from 1 to 6 in the space of three months.

Meanwhile, in the same period 187 people in Clare died, meaning there was a net increase of almost 180 in the population here.

Cancer was the leading cause of death, with malignant neoplasmas claiming 58 lives in the three-month period, while 56 died from circulatory diseases.

Meanwhile, nine people died from dementia-related causes – eight of the women – while Alzeihmers claimed three lives.
