Irish Water Targets Clare’s Aging Water Infrastructure

Irish Water says that as part of its commitment to addressing issues with aging water infrastructure in the county, it has approved funding of 2 million euro towards the replacement of water mains in the Miltown Malbay area.

In a statement to Clare FM, the utility says this will deliver a more reliable and safer drinking water supply to the town and lead to a significant reduction in supply outages such as the one which left the community without water yesterday.

Irish Water says this work is needed on account of the poor state of the water mains in the area, which were laid around 1970.

The project consists of replacing 6.6 kilometres of ageing watermains from Mullagh to Milltown Mallbay and 6 kilometres of mains from Old Doolough to Mullagh.

4.3 kilometres of mains from Mullagh to Annagh Bridge will be the first priority and it’s anticipated that a contractor will be appointed and works will get underway in the third quarter of 2017.
