Irish Water has admitted that the Kilkee beach closure could have been avoided if safeguards at the local wastewater treatment plant had been in place.

An electrical fault led to the discharge of raw sweage into the Victoria Stream and ultimately the closure of the beach at the height of the tourist season, which businesses say had a major impact on trade.

The issue has since been resolved and the bathing restrictions have been lifted, while a generator and an alarm system have been implemented at the plant to prevent against a similar incident in the future.
