INMO Says Robust Management Needed To Tackle Overcrowding

Nursing representatives at University Hospital Limerick say robust management is needed to tackle “gross” overcrowding there.

It comes as the latest figures show a 25% year-on-year jump in the level of overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick in June, the first full month since the opening of the new ED.

When the new facility opened last month, management admitted that it alone would not solve overcrowding, and that additional bed capacity is also needed – A process to secure additional funding for a 96-bed unit there is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the INMO has also revealed there are 37 patients on hospital trolleys at UHL today.

That’s at least 12 more than any hospital in Ireland.

16 of those are in the new Emergency Department, with the remainder on wards.
