HSE refute Orchard Lodge claims but services will end

The HSE has expressed outrage at claims that changes to mental health services in Clare will compromise the independence or freedom of elderly patients.

It follows opposition to the proposed closure of the Orchard Lodge Facility in Kilrush with local representatives vowing to fight the transfer of 17 residents to a private nursing home

In a strongly worded rebuttal of a letter regarding the concerns of Orchard Lodge staff and residents which was circulated to politicians and Clare FM’s Morning Focus programme the HSE says the allegations are grossly misinformed and  far removed from reality.

Though mental health reforms in Clare are being forced by financial and staffing constraints, a spokesperson states that proposed changes to the living arrangements in the Orchard Lodge in Kilrush are clinically led and based on a comprehensive assessment of each individuals care needs.

The spokesperson said they’re outraged that the anonymous letter suggests older people who move to community nursing homes would be deprived their freedom.

The HSE is due to meet unions representing staff regarding the changes at local facilities including those in Kilrush and Ennis today, with families yet to be informed, but the statement does clarify they’re proposing the residential aspect of the Orchard Lodge, Kilrush will discontinue, with Day Services and the West Clare Catering Service to remain.
