The announced inspection took place on October 17th last, on a day when 57 residents were in Mowlam Nursing Home.

Overall, it was found to be compliant in most areas but inspectors found one case of major non-compliance with regards to patients’ dignity.

It was noted that incontinence wear was openly stored on shelving and radiators in some communal toilet areas.

On the date of the inspection, it was noted that some residents were served their lunch in their bedrooms – this was due to a shortage in staff numbers.

Further enquiry found that over a number of months, staff shortages have led to some residents remaining in their rooms on certain days.

HIQA noted this negatively impacted on their dignity, choice and rights.

In response, management at the care centre said a review of staff numbers has been carried out and an improved service has been introduced so that patients who wish to eat in the dining room can be brought there to do so.

Management also said they are satisfied all issues raised in the report have been dealt with.
