University Hospital Limerick Investigating Suspected Coronavirus Case

A suspected case of the coronavirus is being investigated at University Hospital Limerick this evening.

The Limerick Leader reports that a patient is understood to have returned from China, or to have had contact with an individual infected with the virus, in recent weeks.

The person is understood to be presenting with flu-like symptoms.

An action plan, under national guidelines, is implemented in any suspected case of infection.

Though no cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Ireland, the Department of Health says 15 suspected cases have been examined as on Monday, February 3rd.

The coronavirus originated in the Wuhan region of China and has claimed over 600 lives so far, infecting over 31,000 people in total.

Those with underlying health conditions and the elderly are said to be particularly at risk.

The HSE and the Department of Health are not providing information about individual activations of preparedness plans or about individual cases of novel Coronavirus (2019-ncCoV) other than confirmed cases.
