Today marks the busiest day in Irish hospitals of the year so far.

A total of 679 people across the country have been left waiting on trolleys in A&Es and overflow areas of wards; a figure that’s the second highest number since records began.

University Hospital Limerick has emerged on top of that list, with 63 patients left waiting for beds there today.

While it’s some way off its highest ever figure of 82, it’s still a significant increase on the 46 on trolleys at Dooradoyle yesterday.

Cork University Hospital is the second worst-affected facility today, with 60 on trolleys.
