Ongoing high levels of overcrowding at the region’s main hospital have been described as “outrageous” by one Clare health campaigner, who says people in the West and North of the county have never felt more isolated.

Kilrush Councillor Ian Lynch has been reacting to the latest figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, which show that 76 patients have been left waiting for beds at University Hospital Limerick today.

47 patients were on trolleys in the Emergency Department of University Hospital Limerick, according to the INMO.

Their trolleywatch statistics also show a further 29 people were accommodated in overflow areas of wards.

The UL Hospitals Group has apologised to patients experiencing long waits, citing high volumes of patients attending and delayed discharges, as part of the problem.

They’re urging people not to attend the ED unless it’s an emergency, to visit your GP in the first instance, and to utilise the Injury Unit at Ennis General Hospital, where possible.

But Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch insists this isn’t acceptable.
