Hope is being expressed that the Medical Assessment Unit at Ennis General Hospital can be extended to a 24/7 service, to alleviate overcrowding in the Midwest hospital system.

The MAU is currently open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, and 10am to 6pm at weekends.

Though it initially allowed for 16 patient slots midweek and 10 slots on weekends, in early January this was expanded by eight slots daily, allowing for the assessment of another 56 patients every week.
