It was another recrod month for overcrwoding at University Hospital Limerick in October, with 1,450 patients left waiting for beds across the month.

It’s a jump of 405 on the same month last year, according to the latest INMO figures, which represents a 38% annual increase.

During the month, the Dooradoyle facility recorded the highest level of overcrowding of any hospital in the country, with 82 patients waiting for a bed on one day.

In contrast, Ennis General Hospital recorded a drop in trolley numbers from 50 in October 2018, to 21 last month.

Nationally there were over 11, 400 on trolleys in October.

The INMO says the message from the frontline is clear – patients are being put at grave risk.

The union is warning that there’s no doubt that this situation will worsen as winter bites, unless staffing becomes a top priority for the government.
