The government is set to approve one million euro in funding to bolster flood defences at Shannon Airport.

In 2015, the Airport was one of 11 areas in Clare which has been identified as being at risk of flooding by the OPW.

The Irish Independent reports that the payment to Shannon is “unusual” as it’s being paid from a fund that is usually used to support privately-owned regional airports.

An exemption to EU state-aid rules is being sought to allow the grant to be made and the money is expected to be used on the embankment that separates the Airport from the Shannon Estuary.
