Garda Appeal For Witnesses After Ennis War Memorial Shattered By Vandals

Around 4,000 people from Clare were involved in World War one, having enlisted in the British, Australian, American or New Zealand armies.

The war lasted four years, from 1914 to 1918, and during that time over 700 people from this county lost their lives.

Two years ago a memorial was unveiled in the Clare Peace Park, opposite Glór in Ennis, to honour the lives of our fallen men and women.

But just weeks before the major commemorations to mark 100 years since the end of the conflict, one of three glass panels have been shattered.

Keir McNamara of the Clare Peace Park Committee says it will be particularly disappointing for those who will be remembering their loved ones in the weeks to come.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the memorial being vandalised to come forward.

The broken glass was discovered yesterday, and CCTV footage will be sought from nearby businesses.

Superintendent Brendan McDonagh of Ennis Garda Station has condemned the incident.

Anyone with information on the incident are being asked to contact Ennis Garda Station on 065 68 48 100.
