The Ennis South Flood Relief Scheme has been planned for years, but now it seems to be full-steam ahead.

The Minister in charge of the OPW, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, has finally given the go-ahead for the 8.6 million euro works which will see flood defences installed in the Clonroadmore, Ballybeg and Clare Abbey areas.

It’s part of a 22 million euro overall scheme aimed at averting flooding in Ennis – part of those works have already been completed.

Minister Moran has given a guarantee that there will be no further delays.

The contractor will be appointed in the coming days and construction is due to be completed within the coming year and a half.

Clare’s Junior Minister Pat Breen says it will help to ease the fears of those living in flood-prone areas ahead of next winter.

Meanwhile, Minister Moran also met with delegations from Clohaninchy and Clonlara as part of his visit to Clare today.

90,000 euro has been allocated towards flood protection works for flood hit communities near Quilty.

While, the Minister is planning to inspect the River Shannon this weekend to see if there area areas where it can be cleared, in order to ease the threat of flooding in communities close to the River.
