Clonlara residents are said to be frustrated after an environmental objection has seen Clare County Council withdraw flood relief plans for the area.

An objection by environmental campaigner Peter Sweetman has seen the project hit a stumbling block, three years on from severe floods that led to people being evacuated from their homes.

In a statement, the local authority says due to submissions received, it’s been decided to withdraw the plans now until concerns have been addressed.

It goes on to say that once further assessments are completed, they will prepare and submit an updated application at the earliest possible date.

Springfield resident Gerardine Quinlivan, who was evacuated from her home during the last major flood there, has been telling Clare FM’s James Mulhall that it’s vital another plan is put forward as soon as possible.

Statement From Clare County Council

Following consideration of a number of Submissions received as part of the Part VIII application, it became apparent that further information and more detailed assessment of some environmental factors was required. Having regard to that, and to the requirement as a Local Authority to satisfactorily address all relevant environmental matters, it was considered appropriate to withdraw the current Part VIII application. On completion of the necessary further assessments, we will then be in a position to prepare and submit an updated application at the earliest juncture.
