Four Separate Crashes On M18 In Clare Following Hail Showers

Gardaí are adivsing motorists to drive with extreme care this morning as a snow-ice weather alert remains in place for the entire country.

Icy conditions have been reported on a number of routes in the county this morning including the Hand Road in West Clare and the road between Darragh and Ennis, near Lisseycasey.

The  M18 motorway between Barefield and Crusheen is also said to be particularly bad, where a number of collisions occurred last night.

A man has been taken to hospital after his car left the road in a heavy downpour of hail.

It was on of four crashes within a matter of hours last night as Clare FM’s Nicole Gernon reports:

Emergency services were alerted at around 8.30 last night after two cars left the road between Barefield and Crusheen on the motorway.

Gardaí, Ambulance and fire services from Ennis, Shannon and Gort attended the scene.

A man, who had been trapped in one of the cars for over 40 minutes was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick, where he’s being treated for serious injuries, which are not described as life threatening.

The occupants of the second car were uninjured.

It was one of four separate collisions on the same stretch of the motorway in a matter of hours last night and all occurred following hail showers.

A yellow snow-ice weather alert remains in place for the entire country until noon today and Gardaí are advising motorists to slow down and drive with extreme care when out on the county’s roads.
