A former Kilkee hotel is to be converted into an apartment block, despite the refusal by Clare County Council to grant planning permission to the project.

The local authority had refused permission to GFT Investments to change the use of the Ocean Cove Hotel, a decision which has now been overturned by An Bord Pleanala.

The Ocean Cove Hotel operated as a fifty-bedroom hotel, which included a bar, restaurant and gym but it has been unoccupied for a number of years.

GFT Investments was seeking permission to convert it into eighteen apartments, but this was refused by Clare County Council who said the loss of the site to hotel use would negatively impact on the existing tourist services in Kilkee.

The decision was appealed by the developer to An Bord Pleanala, and their inspector concurred with the Council’s decision.

However, An Bord Pleanala gave the project the green light, saying the proposed development is in accordance with proper planning, and that the hotel – in a state of disrepair – is negatively impacting on the aesthetic and amenity value of the town.

Planning permissino has been granted with a total of six condition.
