Former Clare TD Hopes Gender Balance Can Be Achieved In Politics

A former TD and Mayor of Clare has expressed hope that women will aspire to achieve gender balance within politics over the coming decades.

Events are being held across the country to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1918 general election, which was the first time women voted in Ireland, and led to the first Dáil and Irish independence.

Politicians past and present, including former President Mary McAleese, are attending a Politics Needs Women conference being hosted by Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan later at Dublin’s Convention Centre.
