Five FG Leadership Contenders Come Face To Face At Cabinet

The five possible Fine Gael leadership contenders will come face to face at a cabinet meeting this morning.

Speculation has mounted that Enda Kenny will announce the timeline for his departure as Taoiseach at a parliamentary party meeting tomorrow.

With Enda Kenny’s time as leader appearing close to an end, his potential replacements have been maneuvering themselves for a leadership contest.

One of the front runners, Simon Coveney, last night calling for TDs to back off from Enda Kenny.

Minister Coveney and Leo Varadkar remain the favourites to become the new leader.

But last night Health Minister Simon Harris seemed to outline his credentials for leadership – dismissing the suggestion that he’s too young to run for it.

Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald and Education Minister Richard Bruton have also refused to rule themselves out of a contest.

The five contenders will come face to face at this morning’s cabinet meeting – but are likely to keep their powder dry on their intentions until after Enda Kenny addresses the party tomorrow evening.
