73 women from Clare underwent abortions in Ireland last year, the first year the service was made legally available.

Last year, more than 6,500 terminations took place during early pregnancy, while 144 happened as there was a risk to the life of the child or woman.

625 terminations were carried out in January, which was the highest monthly figure recorded last year.

16 counties have registered a higher figure than Clare, suggesting rates of abortion here are lower than in other counties, although in over 500 cases no county was listed so the true number could be higher again.
