Emergency services were alerted shortly before seven o’clock this morning to a flooding incident in a sub-basement area of the Leisure Centre at the Auburn Hotel.

GardaĆ and three units from Ennis Fire Station and two from Shannon attended the scene and closed the facility to the public as a precautionary measure.

Testing was carried out and no chemicals were found at that point, but after crews began pumping water from the site, an unknown chemical or chemicals were later discovered in the water.

Clare’s County Fire Service has confirmed that it is carrying out tests to determine the nature of the chemicals, but say that it poses no environmental risks.

Fire personnel remain at the scene this afternoon.

Hotel Management have confirmed that the leisure centre will remain closed to the public for up to 48 hours while the situation is being assessed.

The hotel itself is continuing to trade as normal.
