Fire Fighters ‘Anger’ And ‘Dismay’ About Local Plan

The trade union representing Clare fire fighters say staff here are angered and dismayed at a new plan for the local service.

The document was adopted by Clare County Council earlier this week, a move which fire personnel say threatens their safety, and that of the public.

The five-year Fire and Emergency Operations Plan for Clare will see crew numbers at Shannon increase from 12 to 15, but reduce by one each in Killaloe and Kilkee.

The document, based on the government's 'Keeping Communities Safe' policy, was passed this week and local representatives say they don't envisage any major changes as a result.

However, Clare fire fighters have expressed grave concerns, some through social media.

In a statement to Clare FM, the SIPTU trade union claims the new plan means there will be 4 crew on a fire appliance, rather than 6 which they say is best practice.

The union says the change has come without consultation, but Councillors have told Clare FM that fire fighters were afforded an opportunity to sit on a committee which drew up the plan, but did not participate.
