There are concerns that changes to the way we pay for our bins will lead to more illegal dumping.

Controversial changes to the charges come into force this weekend which will see households pay by weight or by lift.

Clare’s Fianna Fáil TD says an independent body is needed to oversee the plans as Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill reports:

The new bin charges system is due to come into effect this weekend – flat-rates are being scrapped and customers will pay by weight, or by lift.

It’s part of efforts to encourage people to dispose of waste correctly but it may result in additional charges for some households.

Sinn Féin is demanding that the scheme be abandoned until there’s concessions for households who cannot afford to pay and Fianna Fáil wants the plan to be frozen until a a waste regulator is established.

Clare Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley, who is his party’s Environement Spokesperson doesn’t think it will have a major impact on this county.

It comes as new stats show we’re recycling more than ever before.

Households recycled over 256 thousand tonnes last year – an increase of 7.5 per cent.

The new changes will come into affect as soon as each household’s contract is renewed.

But these people in Clare have mixed views on whether that’s a good thing.
