A father-of-four has been jailed for life for the murder of an Ennis man in the UK.

46-year-old Lyndon Smith from Owen Road in the west Midlands town of Bilston, Wolverhampton claimed he acted in self-defence when he stabbed John Joyce at a pub in Bilston in August last year.

Lyndon Smith had been playing pool with John Joyce and his friends in The Market Tavern on Church Street in Bilston on August 17th last year, when a row broke out over the rules of the game.

Smith, who had drank up to 10 pints of lager, left the pub but returned later that evening armed with a 14 centimetre knife and stabbed the Clare man four times before heading towards a nearby taxi rank.

Paramedics performed emergency CPR and used a defibrillator in the back of an ambulance but despite this, Joyce died at the scene and a post-mortem later revealed he died from a stab wound to the chest.

Lyndon Smith was found guilty of murder by Birmingham Crown Court last Friday and yesterday was sentenced to life in jail.

He will serve a minimum of 22 years behind bars.
