The EU Commissioner for Employment is visiting the Mid West Region today to view first hand the devastating impact that the recession has had on local jobs.

Commissioner Vladimir Spidla is due in the Shannon Training Centre later this morning where he will receive a tour of the facilities

He will then travel to Limerick to meet with a number of community representatives from the regeneration project in Moyross

Commissioner Spidla will also meet with workers that have been made redundant from computer giant Dell which has led to an application for funding from the European Globalisation Fund by the Irish Government

The 500 million euro fund is aimed at providing re-training and up-skilling for workers that have lost their jobs due to the global economic downturn.

The Mayor of Clare Councillor Tony Mulcahy has also called for the Commissioner to visit the industrial estate in Shannon to see first hand the knock on effects of the recession.
