The county town has slipped from the top spot to third in the latest Anti-Litter League survey, following summer inspections.

40 towns and villages across the country have been inspected in the latest survey carried out by An Taisce, on behalf of Irish Business Against Litter.

By enlarge Ennis has performed very well, with all of the approach roads into the town and both Parnell Street and O’Connell Street, the top ranking sites.

The general environs of the Sluice Gates / Mill Bridge / Riverwalk were also excellent, as well as the street level Car Park at Dunnes Stores, which was noted for its attractive landscaping.

The An Taisce report also commends Tidy Towns-sponsored notices on various ‘vacant’ properties, particularly on Parnell Street, which it says helps to take the bare and neglected look off such buildings.

Despite this, Ennis has slipped from the top spot to third, with Cahercalla Estate and the Clon Road Business Park being deemed as moderately littered.

But IBAL Spokesperson Conor Horgan says the town can still retain it’s title as the Cleanest Town In Ireland.

The results come as a former Ennis Mayor has said he believes illegal waste firms are in operation in Clare.

Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy, who has highlighted issues related to dumping in recent times, believes such operators are taking away waste and then dumping it irresponsibly.

Illegal dumping has been a concern here over recent times, and Councillor Murphy believes rogue individuals are to blame for at least some of this.
