Ennis Councillor Says Decision To Call Off St Patrick’s Day Parade ‘Right Thing’ To Do

An Ennis Councillor says the decision to call off this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in the town was the right thing to do.

The news that the Ennis parade has been cancelled for a second straight year is likely to be reflected in similar moves by communities throughout the county and beyond.

Last year’s St. Patrick’s Day parades were one of the first casualties of the COVID pandemic, and now they will be called off again this year.

Clare County Council says the Ennis Municipal District is organising a virtual event for the people of Clare to celebrate the day instead.

Preparations for the online ceremony are underway and further details will be announced in due course.

Former Mayor of Ennis Johnny Flynn says it was the right decision not to go ahead with the parade again this year.

Dublin, Cork and Limerick have all cancelled their parades, and communities throughout the country will almost certainly follow suit.

One of the organisers of the Kilrush Parade, Tom Clohessy, says their event is unlikely to go ahead, but believes it would be a shame to let the day pass without marking it in some way.

A decision had already been made that the Kilfenora Parade won’t go ahead, with organisers saying it wouldn’t be feasible on account of the surge in COVID-19 cases over the Christmas period.

With nearly two month to go to St Patrick’s Day, Orla Vaughan says organisers in other parts of the county should also make their decisions now, in order to give people certainty.
