Ennis Council warn of services cut if bad debt levels rise further

Ennis Town Council is warning that it may have cut its services if the level of bad debt from outstanding commercial rates continue to rise.

Annual financial figures for the local authority show it was owed over 1.7 million euro in uncollected rates up to the end of 2010 and that the council had written off almost 530 thousand euro as irrecoverable.

The accounts also show that expenditure on housing and building was over budget by over 180 thousand euro, while the provision of public toilet facilities in the town cost over 65 thousand euro

Savings were made through reduced wages and a better than expected intake from the non-principal private residence charge.

Speaking to Clare FM Ennis Town Manager Ger Dollard says they have made a provision for bad debt but warns this may not be sustainable.
