Ennis Chamber Hopes Jobbridge Shortcomings Can Be Addressed

Ennis Chamber is urging the government to learn lessons from mistakes made under the Jobbridge programme. 

It comes as Clare's Junior Minister says he believes the controversial scheme will be scrapped next month.

Under the Jobbridge scheme, interns are employed by companies and paid an extra 52 euro 50 cent on top of their social welfare payment. 

The stated aim of the programme is to provide industry experiece to jobseekers, however, critics claim it has been used as a form of cheap labour. 

It's now anticipated that Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar will announce a new scheme in September. 

Junior Minister for Jobs Pat Breen thinks Jobbridge has been a success overall, but agrees there have been problems. 

Meanwhile, The CEO of Ennis Chamber says the government now has an opportunity to addess some of the programmes shortcomings. 

Rita McInerney says the take-up of the scheme in Clare has been high, but experiences have been mixed.
