Permission is being sought for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Kilrush.
The planned development would be positioned adjacent to the existing wastewater tidal outfall tank at Skagh Point.
Irish Water says it would put a stop to the discharge of the equivalent of 5,700 wheelie bins of sewage into the Shannon Estuary every day.
