The ESB is being urged not to inflict a “death by a thousand cuts” at Moneypoint, following the announcement of around 100 job losses in the coming months.

Management met with staff at the coal-burning facility yesterday, who were told that the workforce there would be reduced by October.

The ESB met with staff at the West Clare plant yesterday, when it’s understood they were told the workforce will be reduced to 86 by October, with the loss of 106 jobs.

Staff were also told that voluntary severance packages and offers of redeployment would be available.

But the ESB has declined to publicly confirm details of the jobs losses, and instead says that it’s realigning its operations at Moneypoint, ahead of ceasing the burning of coal by 2025.

The company is due to meet with Clare’s Oireachtas members in Dublin tomorrow, and Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch is urging them to seek clarity from the ESB on the future of jobs.

Clare’s Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley believes the ESB is procrastinating in providing clarity on future plans.

He believes there’s opportunities for job creation in the future but he insists the time to act is now, and not when it’s too late to prepare.
