Tributes Paid To Clare Priest Who Died In Car Accident

The Bishop of Galway is leading tributes to a Clare priest who passed away following an accident in Kinvara last night.

Fr Anthony Minniter died after the car he was driving entered the water in the Quay area.

A large-scale multi-agency operation was launched after Fr. Anthony Minniter’s car entered the sea at The Quay in Kinvara at around 8 o’clock last night.

Local volunteers, and members of the Doolin Coast Guard, as well as GardaĆ­ were among those who came to his aid, and he was taken from the water after a short time.

He was brought to Univeristy Hospital Galway in a critical condition, but later passed away.

GardaĆ­ have appealed for witnesses to come forward, but are understood to be treating the incident as a tragic accident.

News of the death of Fr.Minniter has been met with shock in North Clare and South Galway.

Having previously served as a Patrician Brother, Fr Anthony was ordained in 1991

The Fanore native had most recently served as parish priest in Ballinderreen prior to his retirement, and previously served in Ennistymon, and has family links in the North Clare area.

Bishop of Galway Brendan Kelly has offered his condolences to Fr Anthony’s family and to those who love him in Clare and Galway and says the efforts of emergency service and hospital staff are a great comfort.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
