The alarm was raised around 6 o’clock yesterday evening after the man in his 80s, named locally as Joe Quinn, was injured in a fire at his Meelick home.

It’s understood his son, Seamus Quinn, who’s in his forties, also suffered serious burn injuries while trying to rescue him.

The Emergency Aeromedical Service Air Ambulance and the Shannon-based Irish Coastguard Helicopter, Rescue 115, attended the scene, landing in fields close by.

They were airlifted to Bishopstown GAA field in Cork, and transferred by Ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

The father, Joe Quinn, died from his injuries this morning.

His son Seamus remains in a stable condition in the Burn Unit at CUH.

Gardaí say they are treating the incident as a tragic accident.
