West Clare National School Closes Down

A second school on the Loop Head peninsula has closed due to declining numbers.

Following ongoing consultation with the Department of Education and Skills in recent months, Bishop Fintan Monahan has confirmed the closure of Cross National School.

No pupils have attended the school since November last, and it follows in the footsteps of Querrin National School which shut it’s doors last summer.

Communications Officer for the Diocese of Killaloe, Fr Brendan Quinlivan has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that the emerging trend in rural areas is a reflection of population decline.

Clare FM has invited a number of people within the community of Cross to comment on the matter today, and all of those have declined.
