Clare Parents Among Best In Ireland For Managing Back-To-School Costs

Parents in Clare are among the best in the country at managing back-to-school costs.

A national survey carried out by the Irish League of Credit Unions has found that parents in Munster are the least likely to deny their child certain items because they can’t afford them.

Just over a quarter of Munster families are facing that situation ahead of the new term, while 55% say they will have to cut out extracurricular activities, versus 68% nationwide.

Households with secondary school pupils can expect to pay out an average of €1,399 per child this year, with children in primary school costing around €949.

The ILCU’s Paul Bailey says however that an increasing number of parents are under pressure at this time of year.

Meanwhile, separate figures this morning have shown that 53% of Clare pupils are in classes of 25 or more students.

It’s the fourth lowest figure of any local authority area in the country, although The Irish Independent reports that Irish pupils are still being taught in some of the most overcrowded classrooms in Europe.
