Edna O’Brien Wins Major Book Award At Age Of 87

One of Clare’s most prolific authors has been bestowed with a major literary award at the age of 87.

Tuamgraney native Edna O’Brien has been named as the winner of the 2018 PEN/Nabokov award for her achievements in international literature.

Judges in the 50,000 dollar prize commended the writer for the “absolute perfection of her prose” and her “powerful voice”.

She has written over 20 novels and is well-known for her controversial 1960 work The Country Girls.

Edna will be presented with the award on February 20th in a ceremony in New York.
