Shannon Heritage Staff Say Clarity Now Needed Following Minister’s Visit

Shannon Heritage staff insist answers are urgently needed on whether sites across Clare will remain open beyond the end of this month.

Minister of State for Heritage Malcolm Noonan visited Bunratty Castle & Folk Park yesterday, amid concerns over the planned closure of the site, along with King John’s Castle in Limerick, on August 31st.

Craggaunowen and Knappogue and Dungauire castles, meanwhile, have remained closed since the coronavirus outbreak in March.

The Government is facing mounting calls to prevent the closures, with Shannon Group seeking up to €4 million to keep sites open.

Minister Noonan has admitted that keeping the sites open will be a huge challenge, but remained tight-lipped on whether funding would be provided.

Staff spokesperson Dolores Marren says staff remain in the dark on the issue.
