There’s been a jump of over 150 in the number of people signing on in Clare over the past month.

The CSO states that 4,408 people in Clare were claiming some form of unemployment benefit at the end of October.

That’s a rise of 156 on the figure of 4,252 a month previously; which itself was the lowest figure seen in Clare in some 12 years.

The biggest increase across the month of October came in the North Clare area, where 74 people joined the live register; putting the current total there at 707.

In West Clare, 33 more people are now claiming unemployment benefit; while 35 people in the East Clare area joined dole queues.

In the county town, just 14 more people have started to claim benefits since the end of September, meaning 2,329 overall are on the live register there.

While a jump in numbers from September to October is typical, which may be down to the end of the tourist season, this is the biggest single jump at this time of year in the past decade, albeit from a low base.
