€3.5 Million Handed Out In Housing Adaptation Grants In Clare In 2017

Around €3.5 million in grants was handed out by Clare County Council last year to adapt the homes of elderly or less-able bodied people in this county.

Demand for these schemes is continuing to grow year on year, according to figures released by the local authority.

In total, 2017 saw 516 applications from people in Clare for grants to adapt their homes to suit their needs.

This figure includes both social housing and private residences.

87 applications were received by Clare County Council for the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability, making up over 1.5 million.

The Housing Aid for Older People made up the largest chunk of individual applicants at 261, which came to 1.25 million.

The scheme is aimed at improving the homes of those over the age of 66 living in poor conditions, to make their house habitable.

Meanwhile, just over 700,000 euro went to 168 applicants for the Mobility Aids Grants, which provides funds to address mobility problems in the home.

This can include the purchase and installation of grab-rails, a level access shower, access ramps or a stair-lift and is open to both elderly and disabled applicants.

As of the end of 2017, 280 applicants were still being processed.
