Durcan Criticises ‘Go Safe’ Speed Camera Prosecutions

An Ennis judge has again criticised Garda chief for refusing to overhaul the prosecution of speeding motorists.

Judge Patrick Durcan made the comments as he again struck out a number of cases relating to the ‘Go Safe’ network of speed vans.

This is far from the first time that Judge Patrick Durcan has criticised the Go Safe prosecutions, and yesterday he re-iterated his frustrations by hitting out at what he called the “blank mule-ish refusal” of authorities to listen to his concerns.

Yesterday, he dismissed more cases due to the absence of proof that a penalty notice had been served on the drivers concerned.

One of those, who had allegedly been detected at 112 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone on the main Limerick-Ennis road at Cratloe said they had never received the notice.

Judge Durcan struck out this case, and told Garda Inspector Paul Slattery that registered post should be used to prove such letters had been delivered, and he said the issue is “causing damage.”

Inspector Slattery offered to relay his message to the Commissioner’s office before close of business yesterday.
