A West Clare village is rallying around one of the most powerful men in the World, in a bid to protect his family’s five-star golf resort.

Environmentalists have opposed the proposal to shore up the dunes on Doughmore Beach, which is adjacent to Trump Doonbeg, but a group of residents in the village say the time has come for their voices to be heard too.

The project marks their second attempt to protect the course from coastal erosion, and is on hold somewhat after the Council sought further information on their planning application in February.

As a decision is considered, Doughmore Bay Sand Dunes Protection Group who are to hold a public meeting next Monday night say they’re in fear over the impact of erosion.

Margaret McGrath is Secretary of the organisation – she feels international objectors don’t appreciate the concerns of local people.

Trump International employs up to 300 people at the peak of the tourist season, and provides a significant economic boost to the area.

Liam Ryan, another member of the Group, believes that protecting the dunes and course is vital for the local economy.
